Although obesity was classified as a chronic disease by the American Medical Association, Troupe said it is not treated as other illnesses. If I had cancer, the insurer would not tell me to come on in and well send you to a counselor before you have chemo, she said. Although he argues for treatment from a local surgeon who comes recommended by friends or a family doctor, Kemmeter said he understands Troupe’s frustration. It makes me angry with the insurance companies, he said. If she had heart disease or chest pain, they never would make her jump through so many hoops for treatment. Troupes husband, Bill, sympathizes with her struggles to lose weight over the years and supports his wifes decision to get bariatric surgery in Mexico.

Almost any of the commercial weight loss programs can work but only if they motivate you sufficiently to change the way you eat or increase the amount of calories you burn through physical activity each day (or both). What Should I Look for In a Weight Loss Program? Make sure it is safe. Whether you create your own weight loss program or use a commercial one, make sure it is safe. A safe diet should include all of the recommended daily allowances (RDAs) for vitamins, minerals, and protein. The diet should be lower in calories (energy) only, not in essential vitamins or minerals.

4 Factors Predict If Weight-Loss Surgery Will Cure Diabetes

They eventually narrowed them down to the four used in the scoring system. Patient scores were determined by assigning a certain number of points to each of the four factors. Patients with a low score had the highest chance of remission within five years after surgery, while those with a higher score were less likely to achieve remission. The scoring system’s performance was then tested in nearly 400 patients, according to the study, which was published in the journal The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology. “[The new scoring system] will give patients and physicians a scientifically valid way of assessing the merits of gastric bypass surgery for treating diabetes and deciding whether additional measures should be taken to improve the odds of remission,” lead author George Argyropoulos, from the Geisinger Health System in Danville, Penn., said in a journal news release. The authors of an accompanying commentary agreed. “The DiaRem score could help with selection of appropriate treatment and management of expectations held by both the patient and the multidisciplinary team involved in the patient’s care,” wrote Dimitri Pournaras and Carel le Roux, from Imperial College London, in England.

Hormone Therapy In The 50s Not Linked To Memory Loss

Previous studies had found that women 65 years old and older suffered lasting memory problems when they used hormone therapy to treat symptoms of menopause, such as hot flashes, vaginal dryness and trouble sleeping. Imaging tests even found that the brains of those older women assigned to hormone therapy had become smaller, compared to those who took a placebo. Currently, the government-backed U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends that postmenopausal women avoid hormone replacement therapy due to increased risks of heart disease, stroke, breast cancer and dementia.

Because estrogen by itself may increase the risk of uterine cancer, estrogen-only HRT is generally prescribed only to women who’ve had their uterus removed (a hysterectomy). However, in contrast to the results with estrogen-only HRT, the study also found another type of estrogen-containing medication birth control pills were linked with an increased risk of pancreatic cancer when used over the long term. [ 7 Surprising Facts about The Pill ] Women who took oral contraception for 10 years or more had a 72 percent greater risk of developing pancreatic cancer than those who had never used oral contraception. The study found associations, and cannot prove that estrogen whether in hormone replacement therapy or birth control pills actually causes an increase or decrease in pancreatic cancer risk .

Judge Orders Mental Health Evaluation Of Rabbi Norman Lamm In Yeshiva University Abuse Case

Lipa_sidebar

Moreover, there is a profound lack of global investment in mental health care. Although mental disorders contribute more to the global burden of noncommunicable disease than cardiovascular disease or cancer,[1] the vast majority of countries allocate less than 2% of their health budgets to mental health.[2] Among mental health disorders, unipolar depression[3] is one of the most common and debilitating, affecting an estimated 5% of the population or 350 million people worldwide. Anxiety disorders are diagnosed in nearly half of all clinical depression cases.[4] Despite efforts on the part of governments, healthcare advocates, and policy makers, a persistent lack of awareness and demand among patients and families for adequate mental health services and the underutilization of the services that do exist continue at both the state and local level. This Challenge, therefore, specifically seeks bold and innovative ideas that have the potential to significantly increase the utilization of available evidence-based services for diagnosis and treatment among individuals aged 15 – 44 with depression and anxiety disorders. Ideas should be culturally appropriate and feasible to implement in low-resource settings. “We are thrilled to be partnering with Johnson & Johnson and InnoCentive to apply our collaborative open innovation model seeking solutions to increase awareness and utilization of mental health services for the diagnosis and treatment of depression and anxiety disorders in LMICs,” says Chenelle Bonavito, Program Associate at Scientists Without Borders. “There is enormous need to help people in developing regions of the world who suffer from mental illness,” said Husseini K.

Ghana: Media Practitioners Undergo Nutrition Workshop

For this reason, he said, the Caucus, through legislation and advocacy, would work to strengthen the newly drafted national nutrition policy and make its implementation effective. He disclosed that the Caucus, as part of their objectives, would attach much importance to hunger and right to food issues in the national development agenda, while ensuring that the right to food would be a state policy, backed by the appropriate legislation. He said they would mobilise national capabilities to carry out public advocacy to eradicate hunger while guaranteeing citizens’ right to food, and continue to deliberate on the serious consequences of hunger and malnutrition in Parliament, and give it a prime attention, so that hunger and malnutrition issues would be central in debate and dialogue at the highest level of governance. In a statement, the Wold Food Programme Representative in Ghana, Mr Michael Burnside, said in order for stakeholders to succeed in reducing under nutrition in Ghana, there would be the need for the media to set the agenda for public discourse and shape public debate. He reminded the media of the need to inform and educate the public on current national nutrition indicators and their impact on the country’s human resource, economy and development.

Audit Faults U.s. Health Spending In Afghanistan

Also Kabul, Afghanistan U.S. money isnt provided directly to the Health Ministry but instead goes into an account at the Afghan Central Bank, where USAID and the ministrys contract management unit must sign off before any funds are disbursed, officials said. The report provides no evidence that the extensive measures taken by USAID to safeguard taxpayer resources have resulted in high risk of misuse of funds, Hammink wrote. The agency has been the subject of a series of highly critical audits by the special inspector general, John F. Sopko, a hard-charging former prosecutor who has railed against the U.S. practice of funneling more aid money directly to the Afghan government.

A Look at Health Care Savings Plans

The chemical can occur naturally in soil, or be added to the environment through industrial processes like burning of wood and fuel, or through use of pesticides. Arsenic can’t be destroyed, so wind may send particles into the air, water and land — and subsequently into our food and water supplies. Inorganic arsenic is the more toxic form of the chemical. Prolonged exposure has been linked to increased risk for cancers, but also other health issues including heart disease, diabetes and neurological deficits. Previous research – including studies from Dartmouth University and Consumer Reports — found concerning levels of inorganic arsenic linked to rice, and rice products like infant formula and cereal bars . The FDA decided to conduct its own tests of more than 1,300 samples of rice and related products, and determined the levels of “inorganic arsenic” were too low to cause immediate health damage.

HRA: Health Reimbursement Arrangement. A company sets aside money to pay for an employee’s eligible medical expenses. While some plans allow an employee to roll over the balance year to year, an employee cannot contribute to the account and the amount of money is typically not portable. Eligible health care expenses reimbursed by the employer are considered tax free for the employee. FSA: Flexible Spending Account. An employee sets aside pre-tax dollars in an employer-sponsored account to pay for health care expenses. The key feature of a FSA is “use it or lose it.” An employee must use all money in his or her account during the coverage period (typically a full year) or forfeit any leftover money.

Audit faults U.S. health spending in Afghanistan

Indian author slain in Afghanistan by militants

health spending in Afghanistan By Shashank Bengali September 5, 2013, 1:54 p.m. WASHINGTON An independent audit released Thursday accused the U.S. Agency for International Development of reckless disregard toward the management of U.S. taxpayer dollars, prompting an angry rebuttal from the agency leading American reconstruction efforts in Afghanistan. The special inspector general for Afghanistan reconstruction said the agency funded a $236-million health program without verifying the Afghan governments cost estimate and provided the money directly to the Afghan Health Ministry despite its weak financial management capabilities. Agency officials rejected the audit’s findings.

It took a year of self-educating, anxious waiting, obtaining provider letters, heartache at an initial rejection, and intense bursts of communication between my university, my insurance company, my surgeon, and me. The feeling of relief was unforgettable as I opened my mail to finally find an affirmative response to my appeal. Since then I’ve received many questions from trans folks, largely variations on “how did you do it?” I’ve realized that in order to be most helpful, my answer needs to extend beyond “my university happened to cover trans health care.” When too few people are receiving coverage, trans individuals can hardly form an image of what to expect from the system. Insurance companies feed off a lack of transparency while reform strategies suffer from it. To that end, the next posts in this series address the more unexpected elements of my health insurance experience. Let’s start with my first major realization: An inclusive coverage policy is only the beginning.

Diabetes Drugmakers and Their “Definitely Maybe” Moment

suffering from diabetes and 79 million more demonstrating signs of pre-diabetes, the prospect of long-term usage for glycemic balance medications is growing — as is the question of how safe these pills actually are over the long run. Earlier this week, we finally got our first glimpse as to the answer when two type 2 diabetes safety studies were published in The New England Journal of Medicine whose primary endpoint was to show that the tested medications were superior to the placebo. Diabetes drugmakers’ definitely maybe moment The first study (known as Savor) involved AstraZeneca (NYSE: AZN ) and Bristol-Myers Squibb’s (NYSE: BMY ) DPP-4 inhibitor known as Onglyza, which was tested in a rather large pool of 16,492 patients. The results demonstrated that while Onglyza met the safety aspect of being non-inferior to the placebo, it did not stand out as superior relative to the placebo in reducing a patient’s risk of cardiovascular death, non-fatal heart attack, or non-fatal stroke. What the study did show is that Onglyza did provide a benefit in lowering glycolated hemoglobin levels and improved glycemic balance (as you’d expect), butalso resulted in a 27% increase in incidence of hospitalization for heart failure relative to the placebo. The other study (Examine) involved a type 2 diabetes drug developed by Takeda Pharmaceutical (NASDAQOTH: TKPYY ) known as Nesina which was approved by the FDA earlier this year. Takeda’s study was only about a third of the size (5,380 patients) as AstraZeneca and Bristol-Myers’ Onglyza, but the results were similar in that Nesina was neither inferior nor superior to the placebo. Why the big stink about DPP-4 inhibitor safety, you ask?

Hormone Therapy May Pose Higher Cancer Risk In Some Women

Hormone Therapy for Breast Cancer

“Black women, obese women and women with breast tissue composed largely of fat may benefit from HRT use with minimal excess breast-cancer risk,” the researchers at the University of Chicago wrote in the study, published September 3 in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute. Previous studies had shown that using hormones to alleviate menopause symptoms is linked with an increase in breast-cancer risk. The findings led to fewer hormone prescriptions for postmenopausal women, and a concurrent decrease in breast-cancer incidence shortly thereafter, which has been attributed to the reduced use of HRT, the researchers said. In the new study, in line with the previous findings , there was an overall link between HRT use and a higher rate of breast cancer. On average, 578 in 10,000 women who used HRT developed breast cancer, compared with 546 in 10,000 women who didn’t use HRT.

Aromatase Inhibitors and Breast Cancer Aromatase inhibitors are medications that are effective in treating breast cancer, both in early stage and advanced disease, according to new studies.
